Definition and Overview

Edge finishing is the general term for processing applied to the raw edge of fabric exposed by cutting, or to the edge of a seam allowance after pieces are sewn together. Its purpose is not only to prevent fraying, but also to improve hand feel, thickness, stability after washing, and the appearance of the inside of the product.

Edge treatment is used with almost the same meaning as edge finishing. By contrast, seam allowance finishing usually refers mainly to processing the edge of the seam allowance on the inside of a product, and is a narrower expression than edge finishing, which also includes finishing of visible edges such as hems and necklines.

Position in Product Development

The method of edge finishing is decided at the planning and design stage based on the fabric structure, thickness, tendency to fray, stretch, washing method, and desired appearance. It is important to clearly state the processing method and target area in the specification sheet, pattern, and sewing instructions, and share them with the sewing factory.

In the process, it may be done after cutting, or on the seam allowance after the parts are sewn together. The appropriate order also changes depending on how the seam allowance is opened or turned to one side, and whether topstitching is added in later steps, so this should be considered together with process design.

  • Method of overlocking the seam allowance edge
  • Method of folding the edge into a triple fold and securing it with stitching
  • Method of securing the edge with catch stitch
  • Method of intentionally leaving the raw edge visible and controlling fraying through the characteristics of the fabric

Approach and Practical Points

In prototyping, confirm whether the specified edge finishing is suitable for the fabric. For lightweight fabrics, attention is needed for seam shrinkage and waviness; for heavy fabrics, stepped ridges caused by overlapping seam allowances; and for knits, stretching and seam breakage. The finish changes depending on the combination of fabric, sewing thread, needle, and machine settings.

For edge finishing visible on the outside, check the stitch width, distance from the edge, how corners are handled, and thread color. For seam allowance finishing, focus on the overlock thread coverage, any remaining fray at the edge, seam allowance twisting, and left-right differences. Evaluate samples assuming washing and wear.

Ordering and Quality Considerations

At the time of ordering, "with edge finishing" alone does not specify the method. Specify the target part, processing method, seam allowance width, fold width, stitch type and thread color, front and back sides, and finishing direction in the specification sheet or instruction drawings. For areas where appearance matters, agree on the standard using approval samples.

In quality inspection, check for fraying at the edge, thread breakage, skipped stitches, puckering, waviness, seam allowance being caught, and left-right differences. Even for a raw-edge specification, confirm in advance whether changes to the edge due to washing or friction are within the acceptable range, and make it clear that this is an intentional design.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are edge finishing and overlocking the same?

No. Edge finishing refers to the general processing used to tidy fabric edges and seam allowance edges, while overlocking is one representative method. Triple folding, catch stitch, piping, and other methods are also used for edge finishing depending on the application and specifications.

Is edge finishing unnecessary for fray-resistant fabrics?

For fabrics that do not fray easily even when left raw, it may be possible to omit edge finishing. However, changes to the edge due to washing, friction, and frequency of wear, as well as hand feel and appearance, differ by fabric. Make the decision after prototyping and washing tests.

How far should edge finishing be specified in the specification sheet?

In addition to the target part and processing method, state the seam allowance width, fold width, stitch position, thread color, and whether the seam allowance after processing is opened or pressed to one side. For areas affecting the visible appearance on the outside, sharing instruction drawings and approval samples with the factory helps reduce misunderstandings.
